Recruitment of Contract Staff for the Certificate Examinations
Leaving Certificate / Junior Cycle Examinations 2019 Recruitment

The delivery of the state certificate examinations would not be possible without the co-operation of the thousands of teachers who are appointed each year to supervise and mark the examinations. We depend on teachers for the professionalism; commitment and diligence with which they approach these critical roles each year.

Recruitment of Written Examiners for the 2019 Examinations – Selected Subjects

We currently have vacancies for teachers to

  1. Mark Leaving Certificate written examinations in Business and Gaelige
  2. Mark Junior Cycle written examinations in Gaelige, Home Economics and Religious Education

We will be appointing examiners right up to the start of the marking conferences in June and occasionally afterwards, in order to fill vacancies and in response to examiners dropping out for a variety of reasons.

We are now calling on all teachers, including recently qualified teachers and retired teachers to apply for these positions.

Applications from teachers competent to mark subjects through the medium of Irish are especially welcome. There is an additional payment for marking through Irish.

Policy on appointment of examiners for written examinations

Who Can Apply?
All suitably qualified teachers are welcome to apply for these positions. Examiners will be selected on the basis of their teaching and assessment experience and qualifications. Full training is provided and a supported network is available throughout the marking process.

Applicants for the position must:

  1. Hold a third level degree or equivalent
  2. Have recent teaching experience in the relevant subject area or related subject
  3. Have good organisation and analytical skills
  4. Be able to work to a fixed time-scale
  5. Be available to work full-time for the duration of the marking
  6. Be resident in the Republic of Ireland during the marking period.

*The Teaching Council has confirmed that, including the 2019 examinations, recent and ongoing engagement by teachers (as facilitators of, or participants in, workshops, courses, conferences, etc.) in preparation for State Examination work, and the practice of examination work itself, are recognised in Cosán, the national framework for teachers’ learning, as valid examples of professional learning under a number of headings including:

  • Courses, programmes, workshops and other events
  • Reading and professional contributions
  • Collaboration and Practice
