The Project Maths curricular development initiative involves the phased development and introduction of new syllabuses in Mathematics for both Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate students. In each case, the syllabus has five strands and is being introduced in three phases. Phase 1 involves the introduction of Strands 1 and 2, Phase 2 involves the additional introduction of Strands 3 and 4, and Phase 3 involves the additional introduction of Strand 5. The content of the previous syllabus is phased out as the new material is phased in.

In addition, the various phases have been introduced in an initial group of 24 schools two years ahead of all other schools. The experiences of these schools are helping to inform the finalisation of the syllabus at each phase.

A feedback document was prepared by the Chief Examiner for Leaving Certificate Mathematics 2011, based on the observations of the Examiners, Advising Examiners, and Chief Advising Examiners. Its purpose was to provide feedback to the Project Maths Development Team (the support service) and to the NCCA, in order to assist in their ongoing work with teachers.

This document was made available to all teachers by the Project Maths Development Team in the course of the Project Maths in-career development programme. It is available here: Feedback on 2011 Phase 2 Examinations.

In October 2009, draft versions of the sample papers for the Phase 1 examination in the initial schools were trialled in those schools. The report on this trialling is available here: Report on Trialling of Phase I Sample Papers. The purpose of the trialling process was to measure the effectiveness of the draft sample papers and the marking schemes, rather than to test the then levels of candidate achievement. As a result of the trialling process and feedback received from relevant parties, this report was prepared and amendments were made to the drafts. The finalised versions of the sample papers, available above, were issued to coincide with this report. Feedback from the trialling exercise has also informed the work of the NCCA in providing further assessment examples for school use.
